Raja Nong Chik: Reduce reliance on cars, use public transport instead

Federal Territories Minister, Datuk Raja Nong Chik Zainal Abidin said the current growth in the number of motor vehicles in Malaysia is contributing to the traffic congestion that is costing the country billions in lost productivity.
He said that the number of cars on the road have grown between eight to 12 per cent for the last five years, and equally worrying is the fact that more people are now relying on private vehicles for transportation compared to those using public transportation.
Answering a question by DAP Member of Parliament, Dr Tan Seng Giaw, Raja Nong Chik said that the ratio now is 85:15, in favour of private transportation.
Tan wanted to know what steps the Government is taking to improve the quality of public transportation in the city.
The minister said that the conditions of roads in the city is satisfactory and there are enough roads to cater to the needs of the capital however the attitude of road users, together with accidents and road maintenance work all contribute towards traffic congestion.
He added that the Government is constantly improving the quality of roads as well as its network and there is also a concerted move to further improve the level of public transportation in the city
